Strategic Combo & Cascade Prediction Guide
Welcome to Hex Blast, the ultimate modern browser-based hexagonal matching puzzle game. Built using native HTML5 Canvas and optimized recursive flood-fill algorithms, Hex Blast challenges your spatial awareness and strategic foresight. Unlike typical matching games, Hex Blast operates on a hexagonal lattice coordinate system, meaning every tile has **6 adjacent neighbors** instead of the standard 4. This opens up deeper matching angles and massive cascade potential.
The Mathematics of Hexagonal Grids
To identify clusters, Hex Blast uses a recursive depth-first search (DFS) algorithm based on axial coordinates. When you tap a hexagon at coordinate (q, r), the engine checks its six adjacent directions:
(q+1, r), (q-1, r), (q, r+1),
(q, r-1), (q+1, r-1), (q-1, r+1)
If adjacent hexagons match in color, they are added to the active blast cluster. Tapping a cluster of size N triggers an explosion. The score calculation is exponential, rewarding players who build massive connected clusters:
Score = N² * 10 * ComboMultiplier
This formula means a cluster of 4 yields 160 points, while a cluster of 10 yields an astronomical **1,000 points**! Patience and layout preparation are the secrets to leaderboard domination.
Mastering the Cascade Multiplier
When tiles are blasted away, gravity pulls remaining tiles down. However, on a hex grid, tiles do not fall straight down. They slide down diagonally along the 60-degree grid axes, finding their way into empty spaces below. This is called a **Cascade**.
- Set Up Valleys: Avoid blasting small groups near the top of the grid. Instead, target small groups at the very bottom. This forces the entire column above to slide and shift, triggering passive matches as they settle.
- The Combo Chain: Every passive match triggered by falling tiles increases your active **Combo Multiplier** by 1x. A high-combo chain (e.g. 5x combo) multiplies all points earned in that cycle, launching your score into the tens of thousands.
- Color Isolation: Clear single-color blocker tiles early, even if they yield low points. Consolidating the board into 2-3 primary colors makes forming large 10+ hex clusters incredibly simple.
Special Hexagonal Items
Creating exceptionally large matches dynamically rewards you with powerup tiles directly on the grid:
- Line Blaster (N ≥ 6): Blasting 6+ hexagons creates a glowing indicator tile. Tapping it wipes out all hexagons in all three intersecting diagonal lines across the grid.
- Bomb Hex (N ≥ 8): Blasting 8+ hexagons creates a high-yield explosive. Detonating it instantly vaporizes all adjacent tiles in a 2-ring radius, triggering extensive secondary cascades.
- Rainbow Prism (N ≥ 10): The ultimate powerup. Blasting 10+ tiles rewards you with a Rainbow Prism. Tapping it instantly wipes out every tile of the matching color across the entire grid.
